Healthy Eating on Road Trips

We’re always happy to find clean rest stops when we’re on the road, where we can stop to stretch and walk around. But finding a lunch stop with healthy choices is not as easy.

Chick-fil-A is one of my favorites for a quick bite when we’re traveling. We can order grilled chicken nuggets, a fruit cup and bottled water, but they aren’t always available when we’re ready to stop.

We used to order grilled chicken sandwiches without mayo or dressing, but fewer chains sell them now. Some fast-food spots offer salads, which can be healthy if you don’t overdo the dressing and opt for a vinaigrette instead of creamy choices. But salads have disappeared from some menus.

One advantage of national chains, however, is the calorie counts posted on their menus. While they don’t include nutrition facts like saturated fat and added sugar, a high calorie count is a tipoff that you might want to choose something else. At one popular chain, I chose a kids hamburger meal with water, which at least reduced the calories. Some kids’ meals include sliced apples as an alternative to French fries.

When we’re on the road, we pack snacks like dried fruit and nuts, water, crackers and peanut butter. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (eatright.org) also recommends healthy snack bars, nut butters, whole grain pretzels, crackers and breadsticks. Some rest stop shops offer a variety of healthy snacks like packaged fruit and vegetables and yogurt cups. Supermarkets provide an even better selection.

  1. It is a challenge! I like the kid’s meal idea. Wawa has some decent salads, but they aren’t everywhere.

  2. 👍🏼I love the idea of carrying a few nuts and raisins. They store easily and are a healthy tasty option!
